Birth of Ideas

Seth Godin's post on a topic that you thought you knew everything about leaves you thinking again.

My favorites from Seth's list:

*************************************************

  • Ideas don't come from watching television (Is everyone listening? ;-))
  • Ideas often come while reading a book (Of course!)
  • Ideas occur when dissimilar universes collide (Always!)
  • Ideas often strive to meet expectations. If people expect them to appear, they do (Love this!)
  • Ideas come from our ego, and they do their best when they're generous and selfless (Aww!)
  • Ideas come from nature (These are bound to be great!)
  • An idea must come from somewhere, because if it merely stays where it is and doesn't join us here, it's hidden. And hidden ideas don't ship, have no influence, no intersection with the market. They die, alone. (KM...what else?)

Let's talk about the death of an idea.

Hello there! :-) Surely that's a topic big enough for another post altogether!

BTW, do you believe ideas actually die? Or do they just morph into something else with time or maybe remain unnoticed for a while? :-)

Ideas are like dry or wet leaves on the surface of a pond. Once they sink they will not come back. But definitely similar leaves will keep falling as long as the tree is standing over the pond.

I find that more often than not, they have trouble being born. As for death - I think ideas get replaced by better ones.

Srikumar: Hmm...nice thought-provoking metaphor! Well, they could be raked up again with some effort! :-))

MSC: Trouble being born....hmm....I guess that is the case with some of us. Though some-rare-times there are so many jostling around for space that one feels overwhelmed. Yup....I've read somewhere that ideas don't really die but transform themselves into other ideas and I'm inclined to believe that more often than not...!
